As the new year gets into full swing, and students look to their end of year submissions in Sheffield, here at Igloo Accommodation we want to provide more than your housing, by giving you a new monthly round up of some of the best places to visit, hidden student hotspots, and tricks to save money on your nights out! We’ve also provided a round up of some of Sheffield’s biggest and best club nights and events, so make sure you check that out at the bottom. This month we look at the place to be down by the city: Kelham Island.
Sheffield Spotlight – Kelham Island
Once the beating heart of industry, Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites. The manmade island was formed in the 1100s, and the area has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, quietly becoming one of the most exciting parts of the city. Kelham Island Museum stands a proud reminder of the Sheffield’s industrial history and is great place to learn more about this significant heritage. However, after further developments in the area, Kelham Island has so much more to offer.
Cutlery Works is the largest foodhall in the North of England, spread out over two floors. With a mixture of permanent and semi-permanent unique and independent restaurants, communal dining spaces, bars and coffee roasters, this is a great spot for friends, families, and even dogs. Inspired by food halls from across the world, each restaurants has it’s own identity, engaging with neighbourhood restaurants and chefs, bringing in new talent as well as working with established restauranteurs. Peddler Market is also a hotspot for good food. The night market serves up a tasty mix of award winning street food, craft beer, and cocktails, with live music and art to keep you entertained. There are many independent food spots too, but if you’re looking for variety in one space then it has to be Cutlery Works and Peddler Market.
If you’re looking for something a tad more unique, then it has to be Church. Church has a 100% vegan bar stocking a fine selection of signature cocktails. Over drinks you can lose yourself in an arcade that includes playstation gaming pods, retro arcade machines and a pool table. There is also a fantastic new street food kitchen, plus food and drinks can be enjoyed inside or outside on their balcony terrace overlooking the River Don. Also a 220 capacity live music venue, there is plenty to entertain. This is certainly the spot for a sociable evening with your friends, or a few quiet drinks in the afternoon.
Above the new Krynkl compound – a revolutionary space made entirely from upcycled shipping containers – is the INC Sheffield rooftop bar. With a host of weekly live music events and an inspired cocktail menu, INC provide a rooftop experience truly unique to Sheffield, and even have 2-4-1 on cocktails between 4-8pm on Thursdays. What’s not to love?
We could go on for hours about what there is to do at Kelham Island, so head over to the official Kelham website to get stuck in to the full range of things you can experience.
